Respiratory therapists (RTs) are specialized clinicians focusing on the heart and lungs to assist patients in leading healthy active lives. RTs can be found in hospitals, nursing homes, home health care, diagnostic testing facilities and various other specialties. Admission to the Respiratory Care (RC) Program is competitive, with up to 25 students admitted to the core level of the Respiratory Care Program each year. Once the prerequisites are complete, an application to begin the program can be submitted during the next application cycle.
After successful completion of the first clinical semester, students can apply for a limited student permit (L1) in their desired state of practice. This limited permit allows students to work in a respiratory department, under the supervision of a respiratory care professional, while completing the respiratory care program.
Amid ongoing challenges across the health care workforce, including burnout and shortages, the University of Cincinnati is working to tackle this issue through a program that embeds students in clinical settings.
